Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I live in Darbhanga (India) which has been an education center for decades in this region.   Students have always travelled to Darbhanga to study, not only from our own District but also from nearby areas. Education is a fast growing industry in Darbhanga and as a result it has hundreds of primary and secondary level schools.

What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?

My favorite activity on Answers.com is to ask and answer questions.

If you were inviting someone to join Answers.com, what reason(s) would you give them to convince them they would love being a part of our community?

My reason would be that anyone can share and gain knowledge in the form of Q and A.

What life accomplishments are you proud of?

Well, I am not really proud of anything yet, but it was a wonderful moment when I received an offer of admission to FIIT-JEE for free.

What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done?

Until now the most daring thing I did was to rescue a boy in my neighborhood whose home was partly destroyed during an earthquake that recently occurred in Darbhanga.

You can only pick one:  banjo, butterfly, or babbling brook.  Which would you choose and why?

I’d choose a babbling brook because nature attracts me.

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

My inspiration is my father who encourages me to achieve goals by struggling to reach a major dream.

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

I would like to visit Burj Khalifa because visiting that place costs a lot of money.  My dream is to earn more than the money required to visit the place so I can help my country and its citizens to walk on the path of development.

What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?

I become witty when I’m in trouble.

Meet our awesome Romanian contributor, Desdichado!

This week’s contributor comes to us from Bucharest, the capital of Romania, a city that sits on the Dambovita River in Eastern Europe. This cultured intellectual has a fascinating life. I am excited to introduce premier answerer Desdichado! Read on to learn what makes him so unique…

First Name: Sorin

Occupation: Now I am a pensioner, but I was chemist all my life. I worked for uranium nuclear fuels.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

Desdichado is my user name. It is a Spanish word – and in a sense it means to be unfortunate. It is the title of a very original poem by Gérard de Nerval, a French poet.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I am Romanian, and I live in Bucharest (Bucuresti in the Romanian language); Bucharest is a strange big town, somehow dirty and messy, noisy, crowded but with some beautiful buildings and parks, lakes and restaurants and girls should not be forgotten. So what makes it special? Simply, I was born here 70 years ago. It’s my town with many good and enormous bad things.

How did you discover Answers.com?

I was searching on Google for a correct Romanian language translation of “cut time” as a term in chromatography, I discovered Answers.com on July 8, 2007, but I didn’t discover a very satisfactory answer!

What is your favorite activity on Answers.com?

I like to answer (if I know) questions on Inorganic chemistry, radioactive elements, Romania, Romanian words, etc. I also enjoy correcting errors in questions and answers, but it is difficult for me because my knowledge of the English language is limited.

If you were inviting someone to join Answers.com, how would you convince them that they would love being a part of our community?

There are various reasons:

  • It is a help for many people around the world. And when answering questions, you’re bound to learn about new problems or remember the old ones. It takes intellectual effort and curiosity to answer questions, and both are useful exercises in the everyday life of modern man!
  • It also puts you in permanent contact with strangers from everywhere.
  • Answers.com is an important venue for culture, science and progress.

What life accomplishments are you proud of?

  • I am a graduate of Bucharest University.
  • I managed to get my own small apartment.
  • I have traveled in my country and abroad.
  • I have read many books.
  • I go to many shows, including movies.
  • I worked seriously all my life.
  • I was independent and rebellious.

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you?

There are many! I was once lost in the mountains. Several times I escaped being run over by cars. I have met strange women. I stayed one night in the woods at more than 1200 m, during a cold autumn and drinking snow, without any equipment.

What was the last song you listened to?

It was an old song from my youth: “Questa picollisima serenada”

You can only pick one: banjo, butterfly, or babbling brook. Which would you choose and why?

I like very much brooks in the mountains.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

My special interests are books, movies, theater, trekking in the Carpathians, P.C., strong drinks, walking in parks, visiting Greek islands, the history of science, Romanian politics, museums, and history.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

I am most passionate about chemistry, uranium, truth, honesty, fairness, fighting but also severity, hardness, justified hatred and sometimes intolerance.

Who is your inspiration in life?

My greatest inspiration is Vlad III the Impaler (Vlad Þepeº in the Romanian language) and many other Romanian heroes and of course, heroes from all the nations. I am also inspired by Voltaire, Napoleon, Seaborg and others.

Our very own Answers.com rap!

Get this — Answers.com has its own rap! How many other websites out there can say that?

The catchy beat was recorded recently by Flex Mathews. Our former product manager Shaya met Flex in 2010 at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas. At the conference, Flex and his partner-in-crime, Kosha Dillz, started a freestyle rap after a panel discussion. Shaya took notice of the talent and asked if she could record the two freestyling the next day.

“I got the official idea to write the Answers.com song after seeing the video that Shaya made,” he said.

Turns out Flex was already a fan of Answers.

“I discovered Answers.com about four years ago when I worked a desk job at Walter Reed Army Medical Center,” he said. “I just used the site to look up the definitions of certain words, but didn’t start to use it as a actual information site until about two years ago. I have never gotten any wrong information from Answers.com, so I guess you can say that is what I like the most about the site. I really enjoy the staff as well.”

Well, we really enjoy y-0-u, Flex. We’re so honored to have you record a rap for us!

Pop in your headphones and listen to it right now:

A big thanks to Unreal Production who produced the music for Flex to rap over. Want more of Flex Mathews? Follow him on Twitter, check out his blog, YouTube channel and download some of his music here.

Meet a Texan with a big heart for Answers.com!

Straight from the Great State of Texas, I am pleased to introduce Mannydlr! It’s an honor to feature this regular contributor in the Contributor Corner this week.  Mannydlr loves many things and we are one of them!  Read on to find out more.

First Name: Manny

Occupation: I was a construction worker for 40 years.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

It’s Mannydlr: just my name and initials. Haha!  Vivid imagination!

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I come from El Paso, Texas. We have no natural disasters going on here, like earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, or tsunamis. Mainly it has the honor of still being part of The Great State of Texas. Nothing is better than that!

How did you discover Answers.com? What enticed you to join our community?

I used to surf all over the net.  Then I started asking a few Qs. I joined to make it easier to find the answers. Then in May I realized this was a great place to base my surfing on.  It gave me direction as to what to research. It turned out to be cool that I could learn different things and also help others at the same time. It seems that I am interested in more topics than I first thought. Sometimes I will see a question that is something I would like to find out more about and I spend hours reading all about it.

If you were inviting someone to join Answers.com, what reason(s) would you give them to convince them they would love being a part of our community?

It’s fun, entertaining and educational.

What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?

I believe it must be organizing and fixing alternates. Some are just added into questions that have nothing to do with the original question. It must be because I like everything in order, so organizing these is fun. As of a week ago, I now have an ongoing battle with Dingo-bot.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done or has ever happened to you?

I started a new family at 48, but it is the best thing I have done as well.

What was the last song you listened to?

Nessum Dorma!  It is powerful. I like all music (except bad word rap). Classical is my favorite.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

My daughters, no question!

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

Also my daughters, I live for Saturdays when I get to spend time with them.

What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?

I am WikiAnswers addicted! Was there anyone that didn’t know yet?

Do you have one final comment?

All I have done here on the site is thanks to the patience and teaching of On The Wallaby, my super mentor.
