Meet Montyred: A Transportation Aficionado Who Just May “Settle” for Engineering

This week we jump over to Singapore to interview Montyred. He is currently a high school senior who is bound for great things in life. A graduate of the Mentoring Program, Montyred is most active in the  Chemistry and Elements and Compounds categories on the site. Just ten days after joining, he became a Floating Supervisor and his answers are of excellent quality! That devotion to excellence earned him a runner-up place in the Leap-to-Win AnswerThon. We are pleased to have him on the site.

What is your first name?

Hello, my name is Max.

What is your occupation?

I am a student in the 12th grade.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

My display picture on messenger used to be a character named Morty. I changed the name to “Monty” and added “red” and it became: Montyred.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I am from Singapore. It is special because it is a tiny red dot on the world map. Singapore is only approximately 40 km in length, yet we have achieved much as a young Asian nation. It is also a very multilingual, multicultural and cosmopolitan society.

How did you discover Answers.com?

I was looking for some information and I decided to sign up after landing on the site. A lot of search results from Google direct you to Answers.com.

What life accomplishments are you proud of?

Apart from academic achievements, I would say that I’m proud of having been to a number of countries at my age. My family enjoys traveling. I’ve been to Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Macau, China, South Korea and Thailand. I have a coin album with a collection of coins from these countries.

What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?

I’m proud to have become a Floating Supervisor just 10 days after opening my account. I graduated from the Mentoring Program with C.Hainsaw as my mentor. Also, with some luck, I managed to grab a runner up place in the Leap to Win AnswerThon contest.

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you?

Quite a number of years back, I was knocked down by a car while chasing after someone across the car park. I didn’t see the car approaching because I came from in between the parking lots where my view was blocked. When it came, I  jumped up onto the front of the car and luckily I was fine (what a sigh of relief) because the car wasn’t traveling that fast, albeit fast enough to knock me to the ground.

If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?

1. To find and realize my dreams.

2. To always be healthy.

3. For the world to be a better place for all to live in.

Do you view the glass ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’?  Why?

I see it as half empty because I’m still young with lots to accomplish. Hopefully, I can secure a bright future and excel in my passion, whatever it may be.

What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com contributor?

That would probably be responding (or attempting to respond) to questions which are poorly structured or too vague to be answered. You get that feeling when you want to help answer the question but you can’t.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

I like aviation, magic and reading up about the solar system.  I also wish that I could play the piano like some prodigy.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

Ambitions. My first ambition was to be a bus driver because I thought it was fun to drive around with the big steering wheel to pick people up. Then I wanted to be a pilot. Now I might consider being an engineer.

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

I don’t have a single source of inspiration. Perhaps it is successful businessmen like the late Steve Jobs who built large businesses and did great things, or maybe Justin Bieber who suddenly became a successful artist and now lives his dream. Most likely it’s a bit of everything.

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

I would love to visit the United States, perhaps due to influences like American films and TV shows. Actually, I would like to experience living in America to see the four seasons, to go to supermarkets with lots of American products, to live in a country where there are so many celebrities, and so on. It would be great for me to appreciate the differences in the cultures and lifestyles of westerners, not to mention the beautiful sights and great food that are available there!

What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?

I can watch my favorite movie scene from Bruce Almighty over and over again and still find it amusing and hilarious. And yes it still is! Sometimes it evens plays in my head!

Do you want to add anything?

I love Answers.com and the Kinder Bueno chocolate bar.

A WAmmy of a Year: 2011 Award Winners!

Since 2007, Answers.com has been holding the annual WAmmy awards to honor the top questions on the site and to show our appreciation for all the contributions made by our members and 1025 Supervisors. The name WAmmy is based on the well known Grammy Awards and was inspired by the 1980’s TV game show, ‘Press Your Luck,’ that featured a mischievous cartoon character draped in a cape and known as a Whammy. From the Answer of the Year to the Funniest Question to the Lifetime Achievement Award, the 22 awards reflect the best in each category and are chosen by the community.
This year, out of a total of 14 billionanswers that came from a community of 150 million users, the top response was made by Wildrosebeef. The question: Are cows happy to be killed? The quality of the reply was both thoughtful and thorough and came from someone who has plenty of experience around animals and farms. “I guess you can say that I put a bit of [my] knowledge of Life and Death into that answer to make it have character and a colorful nature. Many think that people who live on a farm are indifferent to these sort of things, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth,” reported Wildrosebeef.

There are winners based on the quality of their answers, and others who prefer to stand out behind the scenes, like ThePrismGroup who won the Most Vandals Blocked award. The zeal he shows as a Vandal Patrol member is simple: “I like everyone to have a good experience when they visit us.” Some win awards from the sheer volume of contributions they make on the site. This year, Stupid Little Genius received the Lifetime Achievement Award. In just under five years, she has made 539,145 contributions.  One can find her everywhere on the site. She is active with questions, answers, edits, organization, community, and more. Have a look at her profile page and you will see that her favorite categories are related to insects, wildlife, and sea animals, and she is most active in Math and Arithmetic. Her expertise on such a variety of topics is truly remarkable and she is most deserving of this award this year.

The WAmmys for 2012 are already underway as users nominate members throughout the year for their valuable contributions.  If you want to nominate someone for a specific WAmmy category, go to the Kontributor Kudos thread in the Community Forum, or the Supervisor Forum under WAmmy. If you have any questions about this award, contact: wammy.awards@wikianswers.com.

Competition is his middle name: ZachMeyer94

It makes sense that an avid gamer would love the contests on Answers.com. ZachMeyer94 has already participated in four AnswerThons and he has placed in each of them! He is a bronze contributor and his favorite categories are Roblox and Racing Video Games. Maybe those long cold winters in his native Wisconsin have helped him to improve his game! Read on to learn more.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

I’m ZachMeyer94. My username is a combination of my shortened first name, my last name, and my birth year.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I hail from the state of Wisconsin, land of cheese….and cows, lots of cows.

What enticed you to join our community?

Quite honestly, I was enticed by the contests. I originally joined to compete in one of the contests and now I usually only get on for the sake of competing in them. I also seem to treat the community as my competition, but in a friendly way.

What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?

CONTESTS!!! That and answering questions about things I really understand. It feels good to share my knowledge with others.

What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?

I love to listen to rock, pop, and some electropop. Some of my favorite bands include: Owl City, Reliant K, Switchfoot, and Skillet.

I enjoy music, eating food (mostly pie), and playing and making video games. PS3 all the way! By the way, I usually go by the name EpikMcWin or Freshbakedpie on games I play.

I am a Christian, a follower of Christ, so that definitely is first on my list of passions. After that I consider myself an avid gamer.

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

My God and king, Jesus, is my inspiration. I think that as humans we all really want to strive for perfection, and since nobody on earth is perfect why not choose the One who is perfect as  role model?

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

There are a lot of places I would love to visit. If I had to choose one place, it would probably be Hawaii. To those of you people living in Hawaii or some other tropical place, feel lucky. You haven’t felt cold until you’ve lived though a Wisconsin winter!

A Man of Few Words and Many Actions: Meet Mystery Mania

Mystery Mania is a man of few words. However, he is a man full of action. In a little over a year, he has made more than 10,000 contributions to Answers.com. But that’s not all! He is a WikiGuide in the Community Outreach Program, a Special Project Assistant, and a Floating Supervisor. Using his technical expertise, Justin designed his very own unofficial site known as Answers.fans where members are invited to socialize with each other. One more interesting fact about Justin: he knows Chinese and greets you with NiHao, Huan Ying (Hello, welcome!) on his profile!

What is your first name?

My name is Justin.

My username is Mystery Mania because my friend said this about me: “Well Justin, I have to say, you’re always full of surprises.”

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

How did you discover Answers.com?

Rockin’ and Rollin’ with Dlhalper!

Dlhalper has had such a fantastic journey in the world of rock music! She has seen so much through her broadcasting career and has even rubbed elbows with music celebrities ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Rush. She is a true humanitarian who spends time helping an autistic child and encouraging and supporting underprivileged children – in between classes. Dlhalper found us while doing her doctorate and never left. Thanks to the gentle persuasion of C.Hainsaw, we are privileged to have her as a Supervisor at Answers.com. She has made almost 4,000 contributions, with over 1,000 of them being answers!

What is your first name? Donna

What is your occupation? I am a professor and an author.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

My username is Dlhalper. It is my first two initials, and my last name. It is short for Donna Lee Halper. I wanted to capitalize my initials, but they ended up lowercase. I decided to just leave them that way.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I come from the greater Boston area. I love Boston. We have lots of amazing historical places, awesome libraries and museums, and excellent ice cream. These days, I live in Quincy which is seven miles south of Boston and the birthplace of two U.S. presidents.

How did you discover Answers.com?

Around 2006, I was searching for something online (I truly do not recall what), but the search led me to an incorrect answer that I found on Answers.com. I wondered how to correct it, and gradually began doing more corrections as my schedule permitted. At the time, I was busy studying for my PhD. Once I finished my degree, I had more time to answer and correct more questions.

What enticed you to join our community?

I come from a media background, working first as a radio announcer, journalist, and researcher, and later as a media historian, author, and professor. Since I used to do a lot of proof-reading and fact-checking, whenever I see incorrect information online, I find myself wanting to fix it!  Now that I am a full-time professor, it is even more irritating because I know how many students “google” something and cite it without checking if the source is accurate. For students, getting to an answer first often takes precedence over getting that answer right. As I became more familiar with how to get the best results from online research, I decided that I might be able to contribute something to Answers.com.

What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?

There are two things I really enjoy. One is correcting wrong answers—not because I am some know-it-all, but because when I can fix an answer, I feel I am contributing to Answers.com’s reputation for accuracy. I also enjoy some of the advice questions, like those from kids who want to meet Justin Bieber, or who wish they could get some girl or guy to like them. We were all young once and we all had crushes on some celebrity. It is nice that kids feel they can come to us with their questions and get taken seriously. Services like Answers.com did not exist when I was growing up, and in a very impersonal society, a friendly and accurate answer can really make a difference for someone.

If you were inviting someone to join Answers.com, what reason(s) would you give them to become a part of our community?

It’s fun! It’s also challenging or at times even frustrating, but more often than not, it’s fun and very gratifying, especially when you finally track down an answer that was difficult to find. You can answer as many or as few questions as you’d like, and not only can you focus on what you know, but you can also learn something new in the process. Answers.com lets you help other people, and you can do it from the comfort of your home, your laptop, smartphone or whatever device you choose. I definitely recommend it.

What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com Supervisor?

Being patient. Some of the answers are sarcastic or rude or the person who answered obviously thought that he or she was being clever. I try to be tactful and remind myself that some of the people doing this are kids and yelling at them won’t teach them to do it the right way.

What life accomplishments are you proud of?

When I was a kid, options for women were still limited, and I was told by many people that I’d never be anything in life. As it turns out, I was the first female DJ at Northeastern University in Boston, and one of the first women hired everywhere I worked during my radio career. While in radio, I discovered the rock group Rush (they later dedicated two albums to me). I am the author of five books and many articles. I got my PhD at the age of 64. I am a big sister and I just celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary!

What is your favorite type of music?  What is your favorite band or artist?

I am a rock and roll fan.  I love classic rock because I used to play it on the radio, but I also love some of the current music. I enjoy folk, jazz, and even some country. Obviously, since the members of Rush are my friends, they are my favorite band, but I also appreciate a wide range of artists having been a DJ and a music director. I am more song oriented than artist oriented. If a song has excellent lyrics, that’s a big plus. Pop music is still the soundtrack of my life.

What is your favorite song?

Two songs have special meaning for me:  “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty, and “Working Man” by Rush.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

I collect stamps, as well as old books, magazines, postcards, and memorabilia that pertain to the history of broadcasting. I love to read – both online and in hard copy – and I love good conversation. I am also always on the lookout for new places to find home-made ice cream!

What is your favorite quote and why?

“You are not expected to complete the task, but neither are you expected to walk away from it.”  Ethics of Our Fathers, the Talmud. I like this quote because it reminds us that although we may not be able to achieve every goal, we can’t use that as an excuse to not even try.

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

  • One is Arnie Ginsburg. He was a DJ I loved when I was growing up who defied the stereotype of his profession with his loud squeaky voice.
  • My mother, who was probably the most patient and spiritual person I ever met.
  • I was also inspired by a professor in college who encouraged me to pursue a career in radio.

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

I would like to visit the Congo where I am supporting an adorable 9 year old whom I’ve been sending to private school since she was 5. Few girls in the Congo are able to get a good education, and when I read about how her family really wished she could be educated, I offered to help. The family and I have been friends ever since. It would be fun to finally meet all of them.

Do you want to add anything?  Additional comments:

My thanks to the Supervisors who served as my mentors. I hope I’m making you proud of me!
