Born on the other side of the Atlantic in Scotland, he now makes his home in Canada. This very week Fixit895 (aka Charlie) reached 10,000 answers on the site! He supervises the Glue and Adhesives and Manufactured and Mobile Homes categories (a clue to his username) and he is also a WikiGuide for Community Outreach and a TIP member. He can figure out how to fix anything and loves to answer questions on the site. On a personal note, he has an admirable military background. We are proud to have him with us! Read on to learn more about this well-travelled and seasoned Supervisor.
What is your first name? My first name is Charlie.
I am a retired technician. After 12 years in the Royal Air Force, including service in Africa and the Middle East, I worked in England as a heavy equipment operator. I later moved to Canada and worked for Canadian Pacific Airlines. Later I joined a submersible company where I helped to build small submarines – the kind that go deep – up to 12,000 feet under the sea.
What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?
I’m originally from Scotland, though now I live in Canada. There were many interesting stops along the way in parts of Africa, the Middle East, England and Jersey in the Channel Islands. These islands are located in the Bay of St Malo where, on a low tide, we could walk to France in an hour.
How did you discover Answers.com?
I was in Yedda first, but then I looked for something else to join after AOL purchased Yedda.
What enticed you to join our community?
What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?
I like to answer odd questions that help people. I will answer about almost anything. Just a few days ago I reached my 10,000th answer.
I love country music from the 60’s and 70’s. Bobby Bare and Kris Kristofferson are my favorites and I often sing their songs at karaoke places.
Who is your favorite poet? What is your favorite poem and why?
That has to be two: Rudyard Kipling and my favourite poem of his is “Tommy” and Siegfried Sassoon, an English poet and soldier, who wrote the poem is “Base Details.”
Finally, there is a good old quote I picked up from living a year or two in Yorkshire – “If tha wants owt doing proper, do it thissen” (If you want something done, the best and most efficient way, then you should do it yourself, to be sure!) And yes, in the Yorkshire Moors, they still do talk this way.
What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com Supervisor?
Unfortunately, the advent of the Internet enabled people to converse with anonymity. I’m challenged by people who hide behind this façade and become pompous and arrogant.
Do you have any special talents?
I seem to have a talent for fixing mechanical and electrical things that I may never even have seen or used before, hence my nickname ‘fixit.’
