What is your first name? Irene
What is your occupation?
I’m still going to school. I babysit and I’ve done a lot of volunteer work.
What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?
My user name is Ireen22. Teachers also like to call me Irene with the English pronunciation. And that sounds more like Ireen than Irene when you compare it to Dutch. The 22 is just a number.
Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?
I come from the Netherlands. For me this place is special because I’m born here. The Netherlands is one of the places where they speak Dutch. It’s a modern country with a great history and it’s quite a safe place. The society is based on helping others. There are a lot of dialects and we even have one province that has its own official language: Friesian which is spoken in Friesland. Of course we have our own typical foods, but you can also eat Turkish, Japanese, American, British, Indian, Greek, and many other international cuisines. And there are the krokets (croquettes filled with meat ragout) with patat friet. It’s a small country with 495 inhabitants per square km! We do have beautiful natural surroundings, too.
How did you discover Answers.com?
Just like many, I found it while using Google. I came upon the site with my mobile phone and joined. I was on vacation so I had no idea what the site would be like on a computer. When I returned home and saw it, I was immediately addicted.
What enticed you to join our community?
First of all I liked the site and the whole idea of sharing your knowledge. What eventually enticed me were the new friends you can make. I love having contact with other Answers.com contributors and Supervisors and learning from them. This is an international site and I love to learn more about other countries and cultures and to see the similarities between them. I’ve also made some good friends. Even though we live in different countries like the USA, Great Britain, India and the Netherlands, we still help each other and talk about daily life.
What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?
What was the last song you listened to?
‘Lion in the Morning Sun’ from Will and the People. That song is actually on the radio right now: ‘Leave me where I’m having fun, cause I’m a lion in the morning sun!’
What makes you unique?
I think that is a question for someone else to answer. It’s the same with having talents. I wouldn’t know what to mention, so I can’t wait to hear what others think!
If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?
That the ill and disabled can be healthy. That the poor can get more money or at least more care, and that more people care about others and do something for them. A lot of people already do that, because there are many charities and volunteers, but more people caring about the world, about nature, animals and about others can’t hurt.
What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?
I like animals a lot and I love to do photography. I don’t use Photoshop. The photo just has to be good. That makes it a bigger challenge. I especially like photographing animals. I also like acting and horseback riding. Of course I like working on Answers.com and being asked for Answers.com interviews.
What are you most passionate about in your life?
I like working with mentally disabled children and doing photography. What do I love the most? It’s not really a passion, but I love ‘my’ dog Makker. Makker is a Dutch name and it means pal. We named him that because he’s our friend and he likes everybody. He’s a mix between a Border Collie and a Stabyhound.
What is your favorite quote and why?
‘Turn your cant’s into cans and your dreams into plans.’ It’s my favourite saying because it keeps me going. I was diagnosed with rheumatism in April of 2012 and there are a lot of things I can’t do anymore. But I’ll just try to turn those can’ts into cans and to make my dreams – like graduating and going to University abroad – into plans!
Who or what is your inspiration in life?
I don’t have one thing or person that is my inspiration. Life is a journey and you take a lot of things from everywhere and then you combine it. That sometimes turns you into your own source of inspiration.
Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?
Just one? Really? There are so many places I’d love to visit. I loved Athens (despite the tear gas used by the police because of the uproars). My rheumatism and the fact that I have to use a wheelchair makes it harder to travel, but I still go. To name one place: Egypt, actually Cairo and Luxor. I want to see those temples and The Great Sphinx.
What is one quirky or interesting random fact about you that most people may not know?
I can move my ears without using my hands or anything else, just with my ears. I can move them separately or at the same time.
Do you want to add anything?
I can’t finish this interview without mentioning some amazing people. I’m glad I’ve made some good friends at Answers.com and you guys deserve some credit. One of my best friends and a virtual ‘sister’ is Spottedtail. She is a great helper. Stupid Little Genius is a good friend, too, and then there is my German buddy, David914. Two other friends are Mannydlr, who calls me a cutie, and my good old mentor, Lazarus.
