Our newest site: Coupons by Answers.com

The holiday season is upon us! Less than 30 days until Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. More than ever before, consumers are turning to the web for deal-hunting on their holiday purchases. So to help our users find the best bargains on the web, we are excited to announce the launch of Coupons by Answers.com!

What is Coupons by Answers.com? It’s an aggregation of the web’s hottest deals — coupons, free shipping offers, discounts, and much more — from popular online retailers such as Best Buy, Target, Macy’s, and Pottery Barn. But what makes this new site particularly special is that we’ll be combining all of this with the community-based Q and A for which Answers.com is known and trusted. With a slight twist: because of the short-lived nature of coupons as well as the opinion-based nature of deal-hunting, we have introduced the multiple answer format for our new Coupons site. Our consumer research has indicated this is the best way to help shoppers, and we’re excited about rolling out this new approach.

Why are we launching our Coupons site? We have found that consumers frequently have questions about the stores and products they want to buy, as well as about the coupons they find. Within our vast community, we know we have plenty of shopping experts who can answer a wide range of shopping-related questions, and we want to share their expertise with our broad audience to users to give them more confidence that they are getting the most for their money.

To celebrate the launch of Coupons, we’re giving away $100 gift cards every day for the next two weeks! Just answer the question posted on the Coupons homepage for a chance to win. And, double your chances to win by “Liking” us on Facebook! Check out all the best bargains at your favorite retailer, then let us know what you think in the comments. Happy Savings!

Did your question get answered? Pay it forward!

Our mission here at Answers.com is to provide answers to all of your questions. Pretty self-explanatory, right? But with an average of one question asked every two seconds, our small staff can’t possibly keep up. That’s where you come in. Because let’s be honest, 6.4 million heads are better than one. Chances are you’ve been the recipient of a well-written answer from one of your fellow community members. And like magic, that answer was delivered right to your inbox. Pretty cool, huh?

You know what they say, “What goes around comes around.” So why not give back to the community who gave you your answer? The best way to do that is by answering someone else’s query. In other words, pay it forward!

Next time you get an answer to a question, look for the new pay it forward link in your answer update email.

Clicking on it will take you to Answers.com’s most recently asked questions. Scroll through and you’ll probably find something you know the answer to.

Better hurry up though, in the time it took you to read this blog post, there have been about 25 more questions asked!

See a good answer? Click recommend!

If you’re an active Answers.com contributor, you no doubt know about trust points. Given by fellow users, a trust point is a virtual pat on the back for a good contribution. It shows that you recommend that user for good answers and trust them to make good edits in the future.

Currently, to give a user a trust point, you can click “recommend” on any answer they’ve edited, or directly on that user’s profile page. But recently we introduced a new way to recommend a user — straight from your answer update emails. Answer update emails are generated when questions on your watchlist are edited. If you see a good contribution, go ahead and click recommend!

Contributors are then notified by email when they receive a trust point. Don’t worry though, your user name is not included in this email. Here’s what that “Hats off – you’ve been recommended!” email looks like:

Trust points are listed next to each contributor’s user name. For example: JohnDoe (5) has five trust points. A couple more tips: You can only give a user one trust point and you cannot subtract trust points. Next time you see a great answer, don’t be afraid to let your fellow contributor know you trust them!

Flagging down those bad answers.

With a community of more than six million contributors, bad answers are bound to happen. One way to combat the crud is to flag a question for improvement. When you flag a question it not only alerts casual users that an answer might be sub-par, it also helps other community members focus their editing energy on the questions and answers that need it the most.

Flagging is a feature that’s been around for awhile, but have you noticed the new design that went live last week? It’s much more streamlined and clean, thanks to our wizard designer, Denise. The new flag is placed just below the question bar and no longer clutters the answer box. Take a look:

So who can flag questions? Well, you, for one! Supervisors also love to wave the flag when they see questionable content. And then there’s our workhorse, Dingobot. Dingobot is a bot created by our team of engineers that automatically flags questions for gibberish, plagiarism and other low quality answers. Here’s a question Dingobot recently flagged. Such a smart bot, isn’t he?

To find a list of recently flagged questions to improve, click Flagged Questions under Site Tools. You can also browse by category and see flagged questions in a particular topic area.

It’s a quick way to boost those contribution points. And remember, every flag you raise (or drop) helps us clean our ever-growing database of 11 million answers. We can’t do it without you!

Need more guidance? Check out this tutorial on flagged questions for more information.

Getting Answers.com pinned down in IE9.

Have you tried IE9 yet? The new version of the Microsoft browser is available to Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, and if you have the opportunity to try it – and its new Pinned Sites and Jump Lists features – you also have the option of accessing Answers.com in a different way!

Pinned Sites are those sites you choose to ‘pin’ or link from the Windows task bar. Open IE9 and go to Answers.com. Then drag the Answers.com icon from URL in the browser (or from the browser tab) onto the task bar at the bottom of the screen. The blue ‘A’ icon will appear, and that will be your direct route to Answers.com from Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Customize further: Right-click the A icon and choose from your favorite pages within Answers.com to show in the Jump List. That way, you can go straight to any page you find valuable, whether it’s your profile, Watchlist, settings, Today’s Highlights, and more.

Tried the feature? Let us know what you think!

Heal what ails you: whether with words or medicine.

I’m delighted to announce two more licensed titles added to Answers.com’s reference collection. Which one speaks to you more?

Modern English Usage, the classic authority on grammar and style.

Should you use a split infinitive, or a preposition at the end of a sentence? Is it infer or imply? Who or whom? What are the main differences between British and American English? Here are clear recommendations on issues of grammar, pronunciation, spelling, confusable words, and written style. Includes examples drawn from classic and contemporary literary sources, newspapers and magazines, and the internet.

An A-Z of Medicinal Drugs, a reference source for the wide range of medicines available today.

This dictionary covers over-the-counter, pharmacy, and prescription medicines, listing side effects and interactions with other medicines; there are entries on conditions and the medicines used to treat them. See juniper berry oil, quinine, or abacavir.

Happy reading!

Check stock quotes on your phone, from Answers.com.

Did you know? You can easily check company stock quotes, charts and news on Answers.com with QuoteMedia. Aim big and see how Google is doing, or find out the latest news and media for Ethan Allen Interiors.

But wouldn’t it be even better on the go? Yeah, we agree. Check the same data on your phone by going to answers.com in your browser on your Android, iPhone and other handheld devices. Look up the company on Answers.com and get your info, organized in expandable tabs:

Slang, popes and molecular biology: It’s all here.

We’re proud and pleased to announce that we now have live on Answers.com six new reference titles. We dare you to come up with a common theme for all of them; but even if you don’t, you’ll still enjoy learning to rhyme popes, using modern slang, in British places while pretending to peruse biochemistry textbooks (but really reading Australian literature).

So here they are for your browsing convenience:

As always, we aim to answer. Happy reading.

Show your face! Add your avatar on Answers.com.

Time for a profile makeover! No, I don’t mean the silhouette of your actual face. I mean getting your avatar on your Answers.com profile.

Why show your face? Well, aside from the fact that it helps build your profile and establish a trustworthy reputation across the site, avatars will play a key role in some upcoming community features.

In that case, I recommend going from this:

To this:

So, how do you get the avatar on there? The trick is to connect your existing Answers.com account with one of the five offered social IDs: Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo!, Google or LinkedIn. Once you connect your account, your avatar and profile URL are pulled in from the social ID’s site. For instance, if you choose Facebook, your profile picture from Facebook will be pulled in as your avatar, and you’ll have a link to your Facebook page on your Answers.com profile.

In three simple steps:

  1. Sign in to Answers.com with your username and go to My Settings.
  2. Under ‘Connect your account,’ click the social ID you’d like to connect with your existing Answers.com account.
  3. Go to My Profile and check it out!

If you don’t have an Answers.com account or username yet, it’s actually even simpler.

Just click one of  the social ID icons above the log in area to connect and sign in within seconds.

From then on, you’ll only need to click the same social ID button to sign into Answers.com.

Your existing avatar will be pulled to your new Answers.com profile, as well as a link to your profile on that other account. You can add all the other details as well by editing your profile on Answers.com. It looks like this:

Here are some helpful tips on this topic:

  • If you’ve changed your avatar on the other social ID site since connecting with Answers.com, and you want to change it on Answers.com too, simply disconnect the accounts on My Settings, and then reconnect.
  • If the first time you signed up for Answers.com was through a social ID, and you want to link it to an existing Answers.com account, you can still do that by going to My Settings.
  • Just because you have your Facebook link in your profile, doesn’t mean all Answers.com users can see your Facebook profile. That is still dependent on your Facebook privacy settings.
  • Read on about signing in and connecting accounts in the Help Center.
  • More information on building a good reputation on Answers.com can be found here.

When the cat’s away… follow it!

It’s time to recognize that being a follower is a good thing…

Hot off the latest feature release: You can easily follow categories on Answers.com by hovering over the category name under any question. A pop up will appear on which you can click ‘Follow category’ and add it to your Watchlist. Get updated with the latest new questions in that category while on Answers.com or from your email.

Added bonus: If you’re signed into Facebook in your browser, you’ll be able to see which of your friends already like that category. Nothing like a friendly face to encourage you to become a follower!

blufr’s Facebook app: no better way to procrastinate.

Played blufr on the web? Played blufr on the iPhone or iPod Touch? It’s time to play blufr directly on Facebook.

I know, I’m being a bit of an enabler here. There are so many ways to procrastinate your work, why add one more? Because it’s directly on Facebook, where you’re already hanging out anyway (let’s  face it).

So, if you’re wondering whether it’s true or false that eggplant comes in different colors… There’s one more place to go to play and find out.

Go the blufr application page on Facebook and click ‘Get application’ below the profile picture. Get even more hooked by inviting friends to join, right from the first screen. Apologies in advance for all the work you won’t get done…

Peek-a-boo! I see video!

For a while now you’ve been able to get all kinds of content on Answers.com: reference articlescommunity-written Q&Asbite-size trivia, and of course, videos.

The unique element of Answers.com is the way the site works to combine those kinds of content, so that  no matter what you look up or ask, you’ll get the best possible answer from all worlds.

Part of that is bringing you relevant videos, no matter what topic you’re looking up. You can find suggested videos at the bottom of reference articles and Q&As, as well as on category pages for both kinds of content.

See it displayed on Q&A category pages, like Cars & Vehicles:

Here it is embedded on reference library pages, like Food & Cooking:

Words, travel, eating; eating words during travel: Brand new content on Answers.com.

We’re pleased to announce tons of new stuff on Answers.com recently.

Pride of place this month goes to Word Menu. It’s hard to explain how useful this can be when you’re at a loss for just the right word. It’s a reverse dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, and collection of glossaries divided into logical categories to help you find the precise word you are looking for. For example, say you’re writing about questions and answers (now, who do we know who does that?) but need more specific shades of meaning.

Word Menu advises that you can impetrate, implore, importune, inquire, interrogate, or investigate instead of “ask,” and you can react, rebut, refuse, rejoin, reply, respond, retort, or retract instead of “answer.”

Or let’s say you you’re writing a novel and a bunch of your characters walk into a bar. Only you know your characters well enough to know what they would order – but what if you can’t think of it? Word Menu comes to the rescue with more words than you knew existed for types of beer, wine, spirits, mixed drinks and more.

On to other matters. Answers.com invites you to explore 500 Extraordinary Islands. Take a virtual tour of Fraser Island, Kauai, Antarctica and other mouthwatering destinations with the famous Frommer’s Guides.

Speaking of places, we’ve got stats and facts galore about 100 or so U.S. Cities – useful if you’re thinking of relocation or just want to know where to find info on shopping in Charlotte, quality of living in Seattle, or the population of Portland.

Next up we’ve got the Flavors Dictionary – especially for biologists, chemists, pharmacists, etc. See info on cashew, butyric acid or butterscotch.

Also, we’ve got our Oxford Articles, a miscellany of information from the Oxford University Press. Enlighten yourself regarding the Babbage-Chambers Paradox, the baboon watch, and Bach flower remedies.

Kitchen Q&A is a collection of straightforward, clear answers relating to food and cooking. It’s almost impossible to stop reading this one, as questions address need-to-know topics like

Cheers and bon appétit!

As always, we aim to answer. Happy reading.

New sharing options help you toot your own horn.

It’s ok; you can be honest with me.

You want everyone to know about the answer you just wrote on Answers.com. Not only do you think others might benefit from it, but you think your own expertise should be highlighted. You want the world to know – or maybe just your social networks. And maybe, just maybe, you like the attention.

Answers.com has made it easier to share your answers with just a few easy clicks, right from the edit page. Share your answers (and edits) on Facebook, Twitter, email and other share sites as soon as you post your answer.

When you are in the edit mode of the question page, be sure to click the check box for ‘Share this answer with friends when you’re done.’  Save your answer or edit, and the page will reload, showing the answer.

Right after, a small pop up box will appear with a place to add text and a few share options to the left. Check the share options you’d like to use, add whatever text you’d like to display with your Q&A, and click Publish.

Ta da! Now your answer has been shared with friends… So sit back and enjoy the praise!

By the way, notice the ‘More from…’ link on the bottom right of the Facebook share – that’s another great way to promote your handiwork on Answers.com. So if you’re trying to build your online reputation, consider using this as part of your strategy.

Calling all Chrome users: Click any word on your screen!

I want you to close your eyes…

Now imagine that you are sitting on the beach, reading an article on your laptop. You come across a word in an article you’re not familiar with. You hold down a key and double-click any word on the screen, and you get background information on that word – instantly.

Answers.com offers a non-invasive way to learn more about what you’re reading – first on your desktop, then for IE, followed by Firefox, and now on Chrome:

With Answers.com, you can get instant definitions, background information, images and more when you hold the Ctrl key (Windows/Linux) or Alt key (Mac) and double-click any word in your browser. A small ‘information bubble’ will appear over the word you’ve clicked. You can easily close the bubble when you’re finished, or click ‘Read more’ to go to the full page on Answers.com.

Ready to get started? Go to the install page for the Answers.com Chrome extension.

Also, stop using your laptop on the beach.

blufr: Not your mama’s trivia game.

Did you know?

You didn’t? Well, maybe that’s because none of it is true…

Or is it?

Introducing blufr, the addictive social trivia game from Answers.com. blufr is not your mama’s jeopardy. Think of it as the place where all the bizarre, odd, random, crazy, funny information from Answers.com gets spiced up and clamped down into bite-size pieces of trivia – which you can decide are true (way!) and which are false (no way!).

And you have to do it better than your friends if you’re going to make it to the top.

It’s a multi-platform game, currently available on the web and for the iPhone (download the iPhone app to your iPhone or iPod Touch). A Facebook app is coming soon.
