Meet Woodman66: Spirit of Adventure in the Canadian Wilderness

Woodman66 at Kamloops

Woodman66 at Kamloops

Woodman66 has been on Answers.com since 2008! He has helped plenty of visitors to our site for almost five years now. He gives his expert advice in the categories of Home Electricity and Electrical Wiring, quite valuable for those brave Do It Yourselfers who make their own repairs and installations! He has truly earned his 2493 trust points. But that’s not all. Woodman66 also participates regularly in our AnswerThons, and he has many badges that highlight his knowledge and contributions. Though he lives in a remote area of British Columbia, Canada, he remains connected to our community. There is much to say about Woodman66, so read on to learn more.

What is your first name? My first name is David but most people just call me Dave.

What is your occupation?

I am a journeyman electrician and I have been an electrical A class contractor for 41 years.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

My user name is Woodman66. The wood part came from my last name, then, I am a man and I started answering questions when I was 66 years of age.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?British Columbia

I live in Princeton, British Columbia, Canada. It’s a small town of 2500 people, with a surrounding area of 3500 people and not a traffic light in sight. I am one of the 3500 people living 5 kilometers from the town center.

What is special about living in your area?

There are no neighbors! My wife and I live on a 120 acre parcel that is located 5 kilometers from the town of Princeton, and what we have here is perfectly suited to our way of living.

Morning view from the deck of Woodman66′s house

Your location is remote, but you also seem to be connected to the world.

Yes, we have all of the amenities of the 21st century: wireless Internet and a TV signal by way of satellite.

What enticed you to join our community?

All my electrical life I have been asked questions regarding electrical installations or how electrical equipment operates. The Answers wiki format allows me to reach people that I don’t know and help them understand the often misunderstood world of electrical installations.

LEO SignIf you could be any animal, what would you be and why?

My zodiac sign is a Leo so there is no question as to what animal I would be. It was pre-ordained by the stars.

What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?

I distribute information to DIY electricians to try and keep them safe when doing their electrical installations. Most people will do it anyways, so I try to give them the best expert information that I can.

What life accomplishments are you proud of?

One of my accomplishments was to obtain my private pilot’s license when I turned 42. I have been flying ever since.

That is a great accomplishment. Where do you fly?

I incorporate my flying into my work as an electrical contractor. In British Columbia, with all of the winding roads, it is easier to fly over the mountains than to drive between them. My wife and I have flown to Niagara Falls twice since 1984. I originally lived there and we go back to see relatives. I take small side trips to other local airports on weekends. Our trips to different airport restaurants are laughingly known as ‘going for a $100.00 hamburger and coffee.’

What is your favorite type of music?

I like the blues and the golden oldies.

What is your favorite song?

My favorite song is Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits.

Do you remember where you were when you first heard the song and what was going on around you?

Sultans of Swing came out in 1979. I first heard it on my drive home from work. I liked the lyrics because they told a story, and I especially like the guitar solo. At the same time, I remember the Canadian conversion from the imperial measurement system to the metric system was going on. To get used to the new temperature readings, we started out simply memorizing: 0 was freezing, 10 was cool, 20 was warm, 30 was hot and 40 was very hot. Funny how the Fahrenheit scale sounds so strange to us today. The other big thing that happened in 1979 was the Iranian hostage crisis. The Canadian Embassy was instrumental in saving the lives of six Americans that year. This is the story of the film, Argo. There is a lot more information about that historical event that the Canadian CBC has published

Do you view the glass ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’?  Why?

The glass is half full. Being an optimist, I like to think that things will always get better. Being negative will bring you and everyone around you down. That is not a good way of going through life.

What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com Supervisor

I really want to help people get projects done correctly and safely when it comes to electricity. It takes effort to deliver that correctly, though I wouldn’t call it a challenge as much as I would call it my mission on the site.

Triumph TR6

What are your special interests?

In the summertime my wife and I tour Canada in our 1975 Triumph TR6.

Your summer trips sound interesting. What was your favorite road trip?

Each road trip is an adventure in itself. When we tour, the only rule is of course, the top must be down. Meeting new people from other small towns and locating eating establishments that the locals recommend is part of the adventure.

Where will you go this summer?

Thermal Hot Springs in Radium

Thermal Hot Springs in Radium

We are planning to go to the Kootenays, in eastern British Columbia. Small towns like Radium and Fairmont all have thermal hot springs and after a few hours of wind blown driving, these towns will be the places where we spend the night.

What is your favorite quote and why?

Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx

It is by Groucho Marx when asked if he would become a member of a club, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”  As for why this quote, you would have to know me personally.

Check out some of Woodman66’s Q&A on the site:

Should solid copper or stranded copper be used with the pressure terminals of a duplex receptacle?

What are the procedures to synchronize generators in parallel?

How do you wire an air compressor?

Is your baseboard heater using power when a single pole thermostat is set to low?

Meet Jenny1988: A Blogger from India who Loves to Answer Questions!

This week’s nascent entrepreneur, Jenny1988, is an avid blogger from India who wants to build her own online business. She believes in following her passions in life and has great sensitivity to nature and helping others. On our site, she was a Runner-Up in the recent 2012 Leap-to-Win AnswerThon, and she states that one of her many hobbies is answering questions. Read more to learn about Jenny1988 and her keen perspective on life.

What is your first name?

My first name is Jenny.

What is your occupation?

I am a student.

What is your Answers.com username?

My username is Jenny1988.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I’m from Pune, India. Pune is a city which has given me a whole lot of different and special memories. I’ve seen ups and downs, so it has taught me so much.

If you were inviting someone to join Answers.com, what reason(s) would you give them to become a part of our community?

Helping people with knowledge and experience is the best thing that can be imparted. Sometimes it is comforting to know that other people have also faced similar situations.

What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?

I recently participated in an AnswerThon and became a top answerer. It was overwhelming.

What was the last song you listened to?

I listened to “Touch my Hand” by David Archuleta.

Do you view the glass ‘half full’ or ‘half empty’?  Why?

I view it as half empty because there is always room for more. There is always a possibility of improvement. A positive attitude is a good thing, but since it often leads to a laid back attitude, it cannot be applied to every walk of life.

You can only pick one:  banjo, butterfly, or babbling brook.  Which would you choose and why?

I would choose a butterfly because I love nature. The pain and hard work that it goes through to become a butterfly is not a cake walk and that shows that if there is “no pain, no gain”.

What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com contributor?

The biggest challenge is not knowing the details that lead to making assumptions. This means that the askers get inaccurate or wrong advice and information.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

My hobbies include blogging, coin collections, philately, painting, and reading.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

Right now, I am most passionate to start something of my own, online, and to do this for a living.

What is your favorite quote and why?

Though it’s not my favorite, I chose the quote that I try and love to follow: “Do what you love and love what you do.”

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

There is no one specifically. My parents have always been there providing all the inspiration I need when I’m not in high spirits. But I try to see the good qualities of a person. It just gives me more insight and shows how much I can improve upon.

Competition is his middle name: ZachMeyer94

It makes sense that an avid gamer would love the contests on Answers.com. ZachMeyer94 has already participated in four AnswerThons and he has placed in each of them! He is a bronze contributor and his favorite categories are Roblox and Racing Video Games. Maybe those long cold winters in his native Wisconsin have helped him to improve his game! Read on to learn more.

What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?

I’m ZachMeyer94. My username is a combination of my shortened first name, my last name, and my birth year.

Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?

I hail from the state of Wisconsin, land of cheese….and cows, lots of cows.

What enticed you to join our community?

Quite honestly, I was enticed by the contests. I originally joined to compete in one of the contests and now I usually only get on for the sake of competing in them. I also seem to treat the community as my competition, but in a friendly way.

What is your favorite thing to do on Answers.com?

CONTESTS!!! That and answering questions about things I really understand. It feels good to share my knowledge with others.

What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?

Winning prizes in four Answers.com contests so far.

What is your favorite type of music?  What is your favorite band or artist?

I love to listen to rock, pop, and some electropop. Some of my favorite bands include: Owl City, Reliant K, Switchfoot, and Skillet.

What is your favorite song?

Hmm… Tough question. Depending on my mood and new music I am listening to, I find my favorite song often changes. Right now my favorite song is probably “Deer in the Headlights” by Owl City.

If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?

I would wish for:

1. Super powers. It would just be cool.

2. Nearly unlimited money. Thinking of all the good things I could do (and things I could buy) with nearly unlimited money just makes my head hurt.

3. I would also wish that every person in the world could feel the love and peace of my savior Jesus before dying. Whether the person chooses to follow Him after that would be a personal decision.

What are your special interests, hobbies, or collections?

I enjoy music, eating food (mostly pie), and playing and making video games. PS3 all the way! By the way, I usually go by the name EpikMcWin or Freshbakedpie on games I play.

What are you most passionate about in your life?

I am a Christian, a follower of Christ, so that definitely is first on my list of passions. After that I consider myself an avid gamer.

Who or what is your inspiration in life?

My God and king, Jesus, is my inspiration. I think that as humans we all really want to strive for perfection, and since nobody on earth is perfect why not choose the One who is perfect as  role model?

Where is one place in the world you would love to visit and why?

There are a lot of places I would love to visit. If I had to choose one place, it would probably be Hawaii. To those of you people living in Hawaii or some other tropical place, feel lucky. You haven’t felt cold until you’ve lived though a Wisconsin winter!

Aggie80: A Champion Among Champions.

This week, we are checking in with another of our awesome Senior SupersAggie80. Around since the days of FAQ Farm, Aggie is a true champion among champions. On his list of accolades is winner of our first ever AnswerThon (and winning or placing in almost most every contest that has followed), just shy of 4,000 Trust Points, a whopping 350,000 contributions and participant in just about every site program in existence today! Wow! The community would not be the same without our most cherished Aggie80. Read on to learn what he’s up to these wiki days:

What is your Answers.com user name?

Aggie80 (Let’s keep the real one out of it!) Aggie is because I am a Texas Aggie, a former student of Texas A&M University and a product of the Corps of Cadets. Yes, I was an officer in the US Navy. And not only is 80 the number in my Aggie ring, it was the year I graduated!

Most common question I am asked: Are you really 109?

Nope. In the early ages of time, as this board hauled itself out of the primordial ooze on its way to becoming the top Answer site on the World Wide Web, a year had to be entered with the birthdate. I didn’t care to share my birth year with the world, so rather than appear to be an infant, I put the oldest year possible, which at that time made me 107 years old. Since then two years have gone by! But I’m less than half that.

How long have you been with the community? What are some of the badges you hold? Awards won?

I joined FAQ Farm, the predecessor to WikiAnswers, in January of 2007 back when it was still being run by Chris Whitten. I have a note from Chris welcoming me as a Supervisor on January 10, 2007.

I won the very first AnswerThon with a paltry 552 answers in 48 hours. Since then I’ve been a top contender in just about every contest held on the site. According to the answer on the WikiAnswers site, I hold more badges than any other individual with ten.

Remind us of what brought you to Answers.com and what keeps you around.

I have a deep desire to be a college professor. Until that happens, I get some of that teaching drive out of my system by working on the site. I have a wide variety of interests, which can be fairly easily ascertained by reading the list of topics that I supervise. Answers.com helps keep me connected with all of them, something that can be hard to do!

The opportunity to learn is also a key draw. I know more now about marriage laws, postage rates, emancipation and military awards then I ever did before! Through some of my friendships on the site, I’ve learned about other countries. (Thanks, HyperX!)

I get frustrated with the nonsense and bad answers provided and want to fix it all! I’ve had to resign myself to the fact that there is only so much one person can do. I would say my first priority is to get as much of the nonsense off the site as possible. It helps that so much can now be done with single mouse clicks! It allows me to multitask while eating lunch or another task.

Since you were last featured, have there been any changes in your life? Exciting new developments?

Oh, just one or two. My daughters graduated high school last year and have now finished their first year of college. I lost a job with an auto company and after being out of work for about 3 months managed to land a very similar job with an IT company. I was lucky compared to many that live around me that have been out of work for much longer than that. I appreciate all the good wishes from my colleagues at WikiAnswers! They provided a lot of encouragement when it was really needed.

Are you involved in any new hobbies or activities (outside of Answers.com)?

I’m slowly (too slowly for my family!) learning the ukulele. I ran across a YouTube video of Julia Nunes (jaaaaaaa) last year and it sort of snowballed. Using the gift cards won on WikiAnswers in the various contests, I’ve purchased a ukulele, numerous instruction books and lots of CDs of ukulele music by Julia, Wade Johnston, Molly Lewis, Jake Shimabukuro and others. I’ve even gotten to see live concerts by Julia and Jake!

And there is the stop motion movie that my daughter and I put together; all of the props are things from WikiAnswers!

What one feature on Answers.com are you directly responsible for suggesting?

Wow! That would be hard to say. I’ve made many suggestions on the various features and certainly provided a huge amount of feedback to the staff on all sorts of items. I know I have often chimed in on things others have suggested.

One of the early contests was a Charity AnswerThon. My daughter, Xanthotrichious, suggested the idea and I pitched it to the Community Team and it became a reality! It was pretty neat and I was pretty proud of my daughter for the idea.

If you could sum up your experiences on Answers.com in five words, what would you say?

Community, learning, sharing, challenging fun!

Do you want to be interviewed for the Contributor corner? Just leave a comment below and we’ll get to work.

Aggie80: All about the AnswerThons!

Is Aggie80 competitive?  Nah.  He’s only placed in seven WikiAnswers contests, won one WAmmy award and one Wizards of Wiki award during his tenure as a supervisor on Answers.com.  I was about to greet him at the Answers Summit in Atlanta a couple weeks ago when I noticed he was typing on his laptop.  I inquired about what he was doing.  He was answering questions in the Holiday AnswerThon naturally!  Whatever it takes to keep his winning streak alive…  This week Aggs waxes poetic about his favorite pastime, the AnswerThon, in the Poetry Cafe.

[If you would like your original poetry profiled on this blog, please e-mail it to poetry @ wikianswers.com (no spaces) and include your Answers.com username!]

An AnswerThon Weekend, by Aggie80 (with apologies to Clement Clark Moore)

’Twas the night before AnswerThon, when all through the house
The only creature stirring was the computer mouse
The keyboard was placed by the monitor with care
Ready for the AnswerThon that soon would be there.

The Super was nestled all snug in his blanket
The WikiAnswers logo more than apparent
And wife in her T-Shirt and I in my cap
Had just settled down to brace for attack.

When up on the screen there arose such a chatter
I checked message boards to see what was the matter
Opened a window, fingers flew in a flash
Popped open more tabs and adobe flash.

Disdainful answers to things you should know
Threw a pall on the knowledge deleted below
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But the Vandal Patrol and their warnings so clear,
With nimble fingers to delete the perverted,
I knew in a moment it would soon be reverted.

They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work,
Reverted the answers and then blocked that jerk.
And laying my finger aside of my mouse,
I comment to no one, “We fixed that louse.”

More rapid then eagles the key strokes they came
They chatted and messaged and typed out by name
Now, Deb, now Brave3, now Ami and Apryl
On Jade, on Bob, on Aggie and Crystal!
To the pages and references that sit by the chair
Looking for answers that soon would be there.

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the screen the answers they flew,
Devoid of the insults and bad spelling too.

Sunday morning came early the answers still flowed
The gleam of the hunt from my eyes still glowed
By afternoon’s light, my fervor had faded,
My answers were terse and some thought  jaded.
The crust of a pizza I held tight in my teeth,
The steam of my coffee round my head like a wreath.

I have a broad face and a little round belly,
That shakes, when I laugh, like a bowlful of jelly.
I was dressed in pajamas, from head to my foot
And my clothes were all wrinkled and crumby to boot.

My eyelids were sagging, my disposition not sunny!
My cheeks were all flush, my nose sort of runny!
My oversized forehead was certainly aglow,
And the chin full of stubble had had three days to grow.

Though chubby and plump, a right jolly old super,
I laughed at the mirror at my own sleepless stupor.
A kink in my neck and an ache in my back
Soon gave me to know I was an aging old hack.

I had given my all, I had done my best,
It was now time for a well deserved rest.
But a moment to post, on my WikiAnswers wall
“To all a good answer and Season’s Greetings to all!”

Steven Keyman is the Million Contribution Man

ruby contributorYou may remember back in May that HisPowr4U passed the million contribution milestone.  She now has some company in the 1,000,000 contrib club… Steven Keyman!  Steven has been an active contributor since June, 2006 (when WikiAnswers was known as FAQ Farm!).

Along the way he’s helped countless memorabilia collectors with their questions about sports collectibles and sports cards.  He also walked away with three WAmmy Awards earlier this year.  Even more, he finished in 2nd place in our first AnswerThon, 1st place in the April edition and 3rd place in our most recent (October) installment of the question-answering contest!  Be sure to take a moment and congratulate the Key Man today!

Congrats, October AnswerThon winners!

SECOND Place is taken by Aggie80, a past champion who answered over 1200 times!

THIRD Place prizes are awarded to Fuzzy Logic (1100+), Porkchop1802 (900+) and Steven Keyman (900+).
