Answers.com @ #SXSWi

Can I get a “Helloooo Austin, Texas!”

Our very own Shaya (@pickleshy) is running around SXSW Interactive with tons of Answers.com gear to giveaway. If you’ve been answering @Answersdotcom‘s tweets and getting prizes for it, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t been – well, only 2.5 days left!

Shaya reported a bit on what she’s seeing and hearing at SXSW and here are a few snapshots to piece together… Oh, and the following statement that Shaya will have to explain at some point:

“Crowdsurfing sheep, flame-throwing buses, robots that play music, random random random (and ppl who call it stochasticity). Nearly saw a terrible rehashing of the super bowl Janet Jackson event during a slightly slutty soul sistas karaoke performance.”

DLD ’10: Getting inspired in Munich.

DLD conferenceAnswers.com’s Bob Rosenschein is in Munich attending DLD this week, and there is nothing like a Digital, Life, Design conference to get us inspired.

A few such inspired moments were captured on digital film and are shared below.

First, ‘Disruptive,’ a panel with guests all involved in disruptive technologies that changed their respective industries.

Vardi, Wales, Zennstrom and Baker at DLD in Munich

This panel was moderated by Yossi Vardi, the father of Israeli high-tech and an angel investor inAnswers.com. The speakers included Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, Niklas Zennström, founder of Skype, and Mitchell Baker, founder of Mozilla.

Another noteworthy moment was when Mitchell Baker received the Aenne Burda award for outstanding female entrepreneur from last year’s winner, Esther Dyson.

Bob sat with Sharona Justman, who runs the annual Israel Conference in Los Angeles.

A quick chat between sessions… Hey, Bob, are you using Mobile Answers?

Answers Summit Day 2: Photos, photos, more photos!

Day 2 of the Answers Summit featured two workshops, a panel on answer quality, an Orange Guy competition and an awards ceremony.

How do you capture all that activity in a summary? Maybe you don’t even try… But these photos from Pickleshy, Eliesheva and YourMom1108 can begin to describe the excitement, the inspiration and the fun we had at today’s events.

The rest of this week we will feature more highlights from the Summit… Meanwhile, check out the photos being posted at the Answers.com Ning fan site.

Georgia Aquarium: wiki-style.

On Day 1 of the Answers Summit, our group of wiki-folk went back to school… schools of fish, that is. The Georgia Aquarium, a four-year-old tribute to the deep end, hosted the Summit participants with a tour and dinner.

Some fun facts about the aquarium:

The Georgia Aquarium contains between 100,000 and 120,000 fish and other sea creatures, representing more than five hundred species. On June 14, 2005, the total number of specimens was unveiled after having previously being reported as “over 55,000″.

The aquarium’s most famous specimens were four young whale sharks from Taiwan named Ralph, Norton, Alice and Trixie, after the primary characters from The Honeymooners.

The aquarium encompasses 550,000 square feet of covered space and includes 328 tons of acrylic windows, 290 plumbing fixtures, 200 floor drains, 53 roof tops, 61 miles of wires and pipes and 100,000 yards of concrete in the structure. It holds 8,000,000 US gallons of fresh and salt water and houses more than 100,000 fish and animals.

Face to face with Wikiholics.

As you could not possibly have forgotten, there was a WikiAnswers Supervisors Conference back in September, where folks from deep inside the trenches – whether on the product development side or the active wiki side – got together in New York City to discuss, debate, laugh and cheer on the wonderful world of WikiAnswers.

At the time, a few of the ‘Wikiholics’ present volunteered to be interviewed and videoed in a quick documentary of their Wikiholicism for all of internet eternity. Now that we’re all back in our computer chairs/couches/beds with our laptops on hand and our browsers pointed to WikiAnswers, I thought it might be nice to review the footage and be inspired over and over.

Warning: this video contains explicit Wikiholicism. If you yourself are a Wikiholic and don’t think you’ll be able to last watching  a video instead of answering and editing, then this video is especially for you.

Like what you saw? Pass it around to your friends and family. This addiction can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere. And who are we to stop it?

The first-ever WikiAnswers Supervisors’ Conference.

So this past Sunday was an incredible experience. It was the first-ever WikiAnswers Supervisors’ Conference, held in New York City. Supers from the United States flew in to the Big Apple for some Big Wiki craziness.

The day started off with meeting and greeting, and of course, breakfast New York style (can you say bagels!?).

After hearing a few words from Answers Corp CEO Bob Rosenschein, the feedback began. Supervisors covered all kinds of areas, including:

  • All new contributors to WikiAnswers should not go a month or so without a welcome message from someone (thanks, Hooweestik!)
  • WikiAnswers must expand its growth in countries where participation is high, like it has done for the Philippines. India is a good place to continue this trend (thanks, Doditov!)
  • Clearer process for asking questions (thanks, Dlmick!)

Supervisors also want to see more in the way of filtering, trivia games on the site, a more interactive homepage and much more. No matter where they hailed from, or which categories they supervise, each participant had so much to offer the group. It was a real treat to sit in the room and listen to the excitement and creativity.

The day was not all WikiBusiness, however. We went to dinner after a long day of idea-sharing, and then took a boat tour around Manhattan.

The official WikiAnswers coffee mug… Talk about enablers.

Bruce has tickets for the boat tour of NYC.

Pninab models the new WikiAnswers Superheroes t-shirt.

As one Supervisor said, the only thing missing from the conference was a little Wiquilla…

Thanks to all the participating Supervisors and employed WikiAnswers folks:

Neila222, Ksmail, An8thg, Dlmick, Myrab51, Doditov, Hooweestik, WikiRicki, Rrosenschein, Jeffs, Gilr, cfoman, Lexagon, Leahsg, Renar, Nirel, Pninab, Pickleshy, Bruce, Brave3, Zanbabe, Deb, Robin, Eliesheva

Looking forward to meeting more Supervisors at the next conference!

A day in the life of a TWS Top 10 winner.

We’ve just returned from a wonderful day at TWS 2008, a hi tech conference that took place in Tel Aviv, Israel. Ten Web 2.0 start ups were chosen from hundreds to present their pitches to the diverse audience, including yours truly (the other nine are summed up over at Mashable, CenterNetworks, Blonde2.0, and VC Cafe).

Judges included Om Malik, Guy Kawasaki, Pete Cashmore, and others.

We made a 5-minute presentation based around the ever-crucial question: Is the wrapper of Trident gum chewable?, which included handing out many many pieces of the stuff to the audience for some real, live social knowledge sharing.

The rest of the day was spent sharing the wonder and beauty that is WikiAnswers: A Q&A website that is based on the wiki format, where anyone can edit questions or answers to create – oh, sorry, there I go with the pitch again.

Here are some of the day’s highlights:

The booth: where all the magic happens.

The pitch: It’s pretty easy with such an awesome site.

This is the face of a person who has chewed too much Trident gum before doing a presentation which includes… Trident gum.

A conversation about WikiAnswers.

The name of the game.

Nothing like a bit of chocolate goo at a conference!

A big thank you to the judges of TWS 2008 for including WikiAnswers among ten of the finest start ups around!

‘Facing Tomorrow’ with a top Googler and a Facebook friend.

A few of us from the Answers Corp crew are attending the Presidential Conference: Facing Tomorrow taking place in Jerusalem, Israel, hosted by its president, Shimon Peres. Fancy, right? We’ll be brushing shoulders with world leaders, politicians, authors, celebrities and technology geeks. The latter is where we fit in, of course.

Many of the speeches and panel discussions are covering technology, new media and the future of this booming global business. We are looking forward to learning as well as sharing – in true WikiAnswers spirit.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind chatting up Mark Zuckerberg or Sergey Brin, who are both attending… If we get the chance, we could recruit those two brains for answering some Technology questions
