The 300th Protégé: RoddLuna

The Mentoring Program has announced its 300th graduate, and he goes by the username RoddLuna. As you may know, the Mentoring Program is a chance for Supervisors, new and even not-so-new, to pair with an experienced Supervisor and get a deeper knowledge of the Super tools and policies. The program has been around now for a few years and has proved successful and effective.

A few words from the Mentoring Program Graduate himself:

I was born and raised in southern California. My family hails from Yuma, Arizona. I come from a long line of lawmen on both sides of the family so I‘ve been around guns all my life. I served in the Air Force during the Vietnam war as an Air Crash Rescue Fireman on the Island of Okinawa. The majority of my adult life I worked in the telecommunications industry. When I retired I went back to work as a contractor and have worked everywhere from Boston, Massachusetts to Honolulu, Hawaii. In March of 2008 I stumbled onto WikiAnswers (Answers.com) and became hooked on answering questions about air guns and rifles. I’ve been collecting air guns for several years. In November ’09 my wife and I attended our first WikiAnswers conference (Answers Summit) in Atlanta, GA where we met other Wikiholics like ourselves.

Previously, I had been asked to supervise a category about firearms but declined as I was not sure what that entailed… A few months ago Topbuilder asked me to supervise a new category which is Air Guns & Air Rifles. This time I was ready. Mike.2 became my Mentor and was very helpful in answering and assisting me with my questions and problems. I found the mentoring experience to be a real asset. I never realized how many tools are available to a supervisor and it does help to have someone assist you with everything. I still feel I can ask Mike.2 for help when I need it. Overall it’s been a great experience.

The next step for a Protégé is to become a Mentor themselves; so stay tuned for whether RoddLuna takes the leap…

On Nursery Rhymes and Tisha05_93.

When I was a toddler, my grandmother used to sing nursery rhymes to me each night; classics such as The Mulberry BushThree Blind MiceLittle Jack Hornerand Three Little Fishies(among a myriad of others). Thinking back takes me to a place I really miss.

Memories also pop to mind whenever I see the name of this week’s Featured Contributor, Tisha05_93. The classic nursery rhyme is, of course, A-Tisket, A-Tasket. But in our case, we can put a twist on it: A-Tisha, A-Tasha. Here’s more on this talented and outgoing Answers.com contributor:

What is your Answers.com user name and the history behind it?

My user name is Tisha05_93Tisha is my name, and my birthday is on the 5th of July! I was born in 1993, and I consider 93 to be a very important number in my life.

Would you care to tell us about your family?

I have a younger sister and a whole lot of uncles and aunts and cousins. I am the youngest in my family (after my sister, but I will humbly accept the tag because I act more immature, LOL). I have had some tough times as a rebel growing up in the pre-teens and until last year, but I have straightened out a bit now. I am more focused; I know what I want and have my family beside me through it all. They are the best. I love them.

Do you have any pets?

Ugh, I wish! I love animals, but I do not have any pets! I do not stay at home much and move around quite a lot so I am doing the animals and myself a favour. When I have the time and ability to take care of a pet, I will get myself one.

Where did you grow up and do you have any special memories of your childhood?

I have had my childhood marked over the entire world! My father travels a lot because of his job and we kept moving around, too. I do not know what place, but I love the mountains, followed by the beach. Special Memories? Yes, I wanted to be a spy at one point! I mean, what kid doesn’t? Although, soon I realised it is not the best dream to pursue, and I gave it up for more reasonable things, like, dance and books and other stuff.

What educational information would you like to share?

I am a good student, because I do well at school. But what my teachers taught me at school never caught my attention. I have always gathered knowledge from the outside and life experiences. Books, as in, school books are useless to me. But thoughts and thinkers? Yes, I would say they make more sense than my teachers.

What are some of your past and present occupations?

I have been a dancer. I only recently moved on to fully concentrate on studies and more serious things. My mother wanted me to be a designer (fashion, that is) so I know a little about clothes.

What are your key areas of knowledge, interest or expertise?

Key areas of knowledge? Dance, fashion, tennis and discussing life, in general. Observing people, learning their outlook towards life and how I am different or like them.

Do you have any collections or hobbies?

I love to dance, sing, play tennis and be happy. I could go about shopping for like hours at a stretch!

What do you like to do for recreation?

Music, of course makes me feel good. I like to spend hours in the bath (hehe) and, also put my life on “pause” and watch others’ go by. I would love to be with my family and loved ones at the end of the day and be lifeless for a second with them filling me up with life.

What are a few random facts about yourself?

I am very picky. Very, very picky. Yes, I could go about shopping for hours, but I always end with, at the most, two items in my bag. I think people choose different roles for themselves in life. I pick to be the kid, always. It is so much fun when, as they say, “The hardest decision is picking up a crayon!” But that does not mean I cannot be serious or act my age. It is a mere choice. When it is needed for me to be not-silly, I will do that.

Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?

Oh, I make friends really quickly! I am a very good dancer, and I love to make people happy! I am a bit too good with kids. They often wonder if I am one of them. Why would they do that?

What accomplishments are you proud of?

That I have gained control of my life after some bad times, and I have always been able to make people I love, love me more.

What are your special goals or dreams?

I do not have ‘special’ goals or dreams. Simple ones like, to be happy. As soon as I turn 18, I will officially be volunteering to adopt a child which could take another two or three years, but I am willing to wait. I want a boy, but a girl would be equally amazing. I do have a name – Casmir, and my fingers crossed!

How would you describe yourself or personality?

My personality: “My maturity level depends on the person I am with.”

What brought you to Answers.com?

My questions about stuff. I was writing answers well before I became a member. It suddenly struck me, “What all could I do if I were a member?”

What other badges do you hold on Answers.com?

WikiGuide and Mentor!

What keeps you coming back to Answers.com?

The sheer urge to come back and meet new and amazing people. This is an easy one, really. I mean, who would not want to be associated with such an awesome Web site?

Putting the ‘community’ in ‘community Q&A’.

WikiAnswers takes its communities very seriously. That’s right, I said communities – plural. That’s because there are tons of different sub communities on WikiAnswers.

To start, check out the growing list of different types of community members. WikiAnswers contributors have a wide variety of ways they can choose to participate, fulfilling a diverse rainbow of roles.

Of course, you can be a plain old contributor if you like… Or if obsessive editing is your thing, you can jazz up your experience by joining as a Premier Editor; same goes for Premier Answerers.

If you like to change it up, consider becoming a Special Projects Assistant and working on what needs to be done most.

If you enjoy the nit picking type of activity, the Exterminators‘ hunt for site bugs and irregularities could be your calling.

Or, join a program:

The Supervisor Community is the group of hundreds of Supervisors whose job it is to keep watch of categories, and make sure the site stays clean and organized. Supervisors come in all different sizes, shapes and colors… Or, at least their badges do. Learn more about Floating Supervisors, Category Supervisors and Senior Supervisors.

The Community Outreach Program hosts several kinds of opportunities for being involved in community efforts. Join and become a WikiGuide, Talent Scout or Forum Fanatic. Welcome and interact with new members.

The Mentoring Program is designed to offer guidance and support for brand new Supervisors (or those who want a brush up on WikiAnswers protocol). Mentors are friendly WikiAnswers folks who have been around the wiki-block quite a few times.

Wiki Influential Teens, or WIT, is a fairly new initiative to give teens on WikiAnswers their own group with which to come up wit ideas, create new projects and participate in contests for prizes.

The Vandal Patrol is a sector of Supers who keep watch for vandals, spammers and general no-good doers. The goal of the patrol is to clean up the vandalism as fast as possible, while swiftly taking care to make sure the perps don’t try it again.

Rharris: All-around awesome and a recat-ing queen.

When I think of long-time WikiAnswers member Rharris, I think of lots of things: Mentor, AnswerThon Runner Up, Category Supervisor (of over 20 topics!)… Robin does it all and she does it with a friendly smile.

A little background on Robin:

  • She lives in the Bluegrass State, or what she calls ‘Bird Paradise.’
  • Some of her time working on WikiAnswers is spent with her grandson on her lap, grabbing for the keyboard.
  • Gertie and Tiny are her two dogs, a Doberman and mini Doberman.

How did you originally hear about WikiAnswers?

My dad had asked me to find out where a certain part was located on a car, and somehow I landed on Faq Farm and asked the question.  I thought it was cool that you could ask anything you wanted to know on the site, so I bookmarked it.

Several months later, I came back to ask another question, and to my surprise, it was no longer FaqFarm, but WikiAnswers!  I wanted to contribute to an answer on a question about suicide, and emailed Crystal, asking her to unprotect the question so that I could.  She was very nice and immediately unprotected the question.  When I think about it, I realize that Crystal’s friendly attitude is the reason I immediately felt welcome and kept coming back.

What motivates you to volunteer your time to the WikiAnswers community?

It’s called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder!  (I prefer to say I have extensive organizational skills.) LOL!

When I realized I could edit questions and answers and categorize, I was ecstatic!  I jumped right in and started correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and categorizing questions.

Seriously, I fell in love with WikiAnswers.  I love the community environment and am dedicated to doing all I can do to help people feel welcome, feel as if they are a part of the community, to want to keep coming back, to want to stay.

I’m a Senior Supervisor of the Literature and Language categories, which is absolutely perfect for me, because I have a huge passion for books and English and writing.  As a non-degree English major, WikiAnswers allows me the opportunity to make use of my writing skills and creative talents.

In assisting Deb with the Mentoring Program, I enjoy helping new supervisors in learning the correct ways to use all the tools we have available to improve and enhance WikiAnswers.   What it all boils down to is that I can help to make a difference in the WikiAnswers community and on the site by doing the very things I am passionate about.

What are your areas of expertise?

I’d have to say my area(s) of expertise are my organizational, English, writing, and people skills.  I love using all these in meeting people, making new friends, and helping bring about harmony and unity within the community, not to mention whipping those questions and answers into shape within the categories I supervise.

What is your favorite WikiAnswers feature?

Oh, my gosh!  This one is hard to answer!

It could be the ability to edit questions and edit answers. Or is it being able to work in the community and help to create some old-fashioned neighborly bonding? Perhaps it’s the fact that I meet so many wonderful people from all over the world. Or could it be the thrill I get from helping people learn new things? Then again, maybe it’s that I, myself, have learned so much  by being part of WikiAnswers and am learning new things each day.

As for the physical features of the site, I love to organize, so I’d have to say my favorite feature is recategorizing – and there are so many different ways to go about doing that!  I can split alternate wordings and recat, I can recat from the topics I supervise, I can recat recently asked questions, go to my watchlist and recat from there, or use the advanced search option and recat from there.

What is the funniest question/funniest experience as a Supervisor on WikiAnswers?

I’ve seen so many questions I thought were funny that it would be hard to choose just one.  But I really got a kick out of Where can you find wild camels? And the answer was, “There is an excellent video called “Camels gone wild!” that follows a herd of wild and woolly Camels to Fort Lauderdale for spring break. Stay away from Camels in a mosh pit as they can be very dangerous.”  And I loved the question,  What is lack toast and tolerant?

Share a random fact about yourself.

I have a snake phobia, and hate slugs because they remind me of short, fat snakes, and won’t eat mushrooms because they remind me of slimy slugs. I know… that’s crazy! LOL!

I’m a very friendly person who loves to laugh and I see humor in things other people don’t.  I love to meet people, help people, and work with people.
