Answers takes Manhattan!

Whether in the forums, on the message boards or through email, many of you have interacted with members of our community team. We practically live online but every once in awhile we get together IRL. The team gathered last week for an employee summit in New York City for some meetings and offline fun. Here’s a photo of the whole gang.

We had lots of fun, but the week wasn’t all shenanigans. It was also filled with tons of brainstorming sessions to figure out ways to improve your Answers.com experience. We’re looking forward to sharing those features with you in the coming months!

Some of you might recognize familiar faces in this crowd, but just in case, here’s a list of the some of the amazing community team members.

Our mascot the Orange Guy also tagged along for the trip. Here’s a photo of him enjoying Times Square.

p.s. Do you follow Orange Guy on Facebook? He’s been traveling a lot lately — China, Costa Rica, and of course he was with us last week in the Big Apple!

The Community Team has united in NYC…

Fantastic... more than four. But still fantastic!Much like when superheroes hear the call, change into costume, and unite to defend Planet Earth, Answers.com’s Community Team is banding together this week, joining forces in New York City for an in-person gathering of awesome.

That is to say, because many of us are spread out, this week we are meeting face-to-face to talk about the Answers.com community-at-large, burning issues we’d like to solve and new ideas for the coming year.

So there is no traditional Contributor Corner this week, but we’ll be back to our regularly-scheduled program in no time!

Want to get in on the discussion? Leave a comment with your ideas, suggestions, concerns or good wishes and we’ll share it at the meetings this week.

Green bean bag chairs? Orange couches? Wavy desks?

Answers.com’s New York City headquarters is making room for added office space. On top of making it look pretty, the team is looking forward to a shared space that promotes freer thinking and offline collaboration. In short – those talented, creative minds behind Answers.com’s community need their space!

9 out of 10 community coordinators agree: Wavy desks are more fun.

Blue walls help you think harder. It’s science.

The Orange Guy must have been here.

And ‘Dash’ they did: Answers.com takes Central Park.

As of this weekend, there’s a whole new meaning to ‘follow us for the answers…’

The Answers.com staff are very proud of our speedy colleagues, who made it across the finish line at NYC’s Dash & Splash yesterday. Denise (Graphic Design), Shaya (Product Management) and Julie (Answers.com Francais) ran the 10k race through Central Park, displaying Answers.com pride (and drinking plenty of water):

Shaya, Julie and Denise smile for the paparazzi post-race. After months of training, they did great time: 1:22, 1:19, 1:11 respectively.

Follow them for the answers… and people did! Well, it was a race.

Shaya says that post-Dash, she’s going to continue running; with such a great victory pose, why let it go to waste?

The weather was hot, the spray stations were refreshing, but Denise was the coolest of all – doesn’t she make it look so simple?

NYC’s Dash & Splash is gonna get Answer’d!

Here at Answers.com, we feel like we are constantly running and running (cue the Black Eyed Peas) – creating new ideas, releasing features, making answers happen…

So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that our very own Denise (Graphic Design), Shaya (Product Management) and Julie (Answers.com Francais) decided to take that energy and apply it to… actually running – for the New York Road Runners Dash & Splash!

It’s a 10k ‘dash’ happening in New York City’s Central Park tomorrow morning, followed by the ‘splash’  at Lasker Pool. Post-race festivities will take place nearby. You can see more info here.

If you’re in the area, go check it out – and look for the ladies in the Answers.com shirts!

Making our mark at the Web 2.0 Expo.

Dan struts his stuff

A word or two from the point of view of a proud Product Manager – yours truly.

On Friday, we wrapped up the 4-day Web 2.0 Expo in New York City. Denise (Graphic Designer), Suzanne (Community Coordinator) and I attended various sessions throughout the week, focusing mainly on community and UI design, but also listening in on the odd session about company and work flow organization.

I, for one, have this stuff coming out of my ears. I’m even dreaming about feeds, friending and unusual mobile devices. But we got a lot out of it.

We should be really proud of what we’ve accomplished with WikiAnswers. Our sandbox method and our tight involvement with the community impressed many people involved in startups and not-so-startups in similar adolescent stages. We’re doing so much right already that at some of the sessions, instead of asking questions, we were able to offer insight.

That said, there’s still a lot to do. It was interesting to hear how the leaders of other web-based community products have chosen to approach issues we deal with every day, like feature requests, the phase 1 rut, out-of-control discussion pages, slow release cycles, user ranking, and so on. We came away from the conference with some very specific takeaways, which I hope will make our sites even richer.Javitz Center - home to w2e

Finally, Dan – our lead Prod Ops guy – and I had the opportunity to show off Answers.com and WikiAnswers at our booth in the expo hall. There was a lot of positive interest, and people loved the reference/community package. And as always… they were astounded that these sites are free.

It was a great week, and one that put WikiAnswers into a lot of perspective for me. I look forward to putting our ideas into action!
