What is your first name? My first name is Gareth.
What is your Answers.com username and how did it come about?
I was very interested in stagecraft, especially light and sound effects. A teacher once placed a note on a script to point out where she expected me to create something to enhance a scene. It simply said “GarethFX.” I picked up on that and kept on using it for signing off on areas where I had undertaken work. I’ve been using it now for over 40 years.
Where in the world do you hail from and what makes this place special?
I’m a born, bred and very proud Welshman. I live in an historic town outside Cardiff in South Wales. The area is historic since in the 17th and 18th centuries most of the world’s steel and iron was made here. There are records documenting early US settlers laying the rail tracks for the push west with steel forged by the people in my hometown. Our furnaces even made some of the cannon and cannon balls used at Waterloo.
How did you discover Answers.com?
What enticed you to join our community?
Having stumbled across a Rugby answer I was looking for, I started to look at some of the questions others were asking about a vast range of things. I came across the question: “What do you need to open your own store?” Having spent a huge amount of time in retail, I wanted to answer it. I registered and pounded away at my keyboard for a while to give as much detail as possible. A Supervisor contacted me through my message board and congratulated me on the answer. I then became more interested in the Business and Finance, Jobs and Education, and of course, Rugby categories. A short time later, I was approached to become a Supervisor.
What accomplishments on Answers.com are you proud of?
It may sound like a cliché, but I feel great pride when I’ve helped someone either by guiding them, or by providing an answer to something they want to know and then a message comes along just saying “thank you.”
It is difficult to deal with members who seem determined to be disruptive, abusive or just plain rude when you’ve done your very best to help them.
What do you find most challenging as an Answers.com contributor?
I suppose it’s making sure that the answers I provide are informative and, more importantly, as accurate as possible.
I love to develop text-based adventure games. I’m currently working on one about a hidden treasure. To make them more realistic, I’ve taught myself to use Photoshop so that I can make the graphics associated with locations in the game. I’ve also been a flight simmer online for many years and even painted some textures (ie, skins or surfaces for aircraft in a game environment) for use on the Microsoft platform.
What are you most passionate about in your life?
This one is easy: my wife and daughter. They mean everything to me and always have. I suppose most family guys would say more or less the same. Until you have something as special as a family, you really do not know what fulfillment means.
“I told them I was ill!” It’s a quote from comedian and writer Spike Milligan of the British radio program, The Goon Show, popular in the 1950s. It was the epitaph he asked for on his gravestone. The man suffered terrible bouts of depression, yet he produced some of the funniest scripts ever. He was an inspiration to the Monty Python Team. The quote just makes me smile every time I hear it.
Do you have any special talents?
I’m a competent user of sign language, a skill that allows me to communicate with those who have a hearing impairment. I’ve used it many times when the situation was appropriate and much to the surprise of employers and people who thought they knew me well.
